Merchants Insurance Group Strategic Profile

Since 1918, Merchants Insurance Group has been providing quality property and casualty insurance protection to our policyholders, and we have been earning their business...every day. We provide financial protection to businesses and individuals in market segments with identifiable risk characteristics in the Northeastern, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwestern United States. Merchants’ goal is to achieve a leadership position in our markets by developing and delivering outstanding products, and responding to customer requests and resolving claims quickly and accurately.

Merchants Insurance Group is comprised of three companies, Merchants Mutual Insurance Company, Merchants Preferred Insurance Company and Merchants National Insurance Company. Merchants Insurance Group has offices in Buffalo, Albany and Hauppauge, New York; Manchester, New Hampshire; Moorestown, New Jersey; and Columbus, Ohio.

Our products are sold through a network of more than 600 independent insurance agents. Our agents are typically located in small and medium-sized cities, suburban and rural communities. We sell our products through independent agents because we believe they provide value to policyholders through their broad range of products and their insurance expertise. We target agencies that have between $3 and $15 million in total agency volume.

Our Regional Managers and Territory Managers are responsible for developing the agency relationship to additional revenues at profitable returns for the company. We use a comprehensive sales, management and underwriting skills program that directs our Territory Managers’ efforts on those sales opportunities that provide the greatest potential for increased profit. Our Regional Managers conduct sales and training meetings to familiarize agency personnel with our products, pricing and underwriting requirements.
