Merchants Announces Promotion of Tim Smith to Regional Vice President, Midlantic Regional Office

Merchants Insurance Group has announced the promotion of Tim Smith to Regional Vice President of the company’s Midlantic Regional Office (MRO) in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, effective December 2025.
Smith brings more than 39 years of competitive industry experience to his new leadership role with a background spanning underwriting, sales, and claims. He joined Merchants on March 29, 2021, most recently serving as Regional Underwriting Manager for the company’s Midlantic Regional Office, where he played a key role in strengthening the organization’s underwriting strategy and regional performance. Located in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, Merchants Insurance Group’s Midlantic Regional Office serves New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining Merchants, Smith held a variety of leadership positions, including Senior Territory Manager, Middle Market Construction; Senior Middle Market Territory Manager; and Agency Management Specialist, across multiple insurance carriers. Previously in his career, he spent more than 15 years in claims, serving as a Supervisor, Manager, and Large Claim Specialist.
“Tim’s promotion is a reflection of his exceptional leadership, deep industry knowledge, and consistent ability to deliver results,” said Charles E. Makey, III, President and Chief Executive Officer of Merchants Insurance Group. “His broad experience across underwriting, sales, and claims gives him a unique, well-rounded perspective that will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our presence in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.”
In his new role, he will continue to focus on driving growth, strengthening agency partnerships, and developing talent across the region. Smith succeeds Rich Chichester, who retired in September after 15 years of dedicated service to the organization.
“I’m honored to step into the role of Regional Vice President and continue serving our agency partners throughout New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania,” said Tim Smith. “I’m incredibly proud of the work our team has accomplished, and I look forward to building on that momentum.”
Smith holds Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from Stockton University and the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation, conferred by The Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Smith remains actively engaged in his community. He has previously served on the Lenape Valley High School Board of Education and supports conservation initiatives through his involvement with Trout Unlimited. He enjoys time spent with family and outdoor pursuits such as fishing, hunting, and hiking.
