Merchants Insurance Group, a regional property and casualty insurance carrier, regularly appoints new independent agents throughout our operating territories. Our products are sold through a network of more than 1,000 independent insurance agents that are typically located in small and medium-sized cities, suburban and rural communities.

We sell our products through independent agents because we believe they provide value to policyholders through their broad range of products and their insurance expertise. We seek business partners that are professional, ethical and dedicated to success through uncompromising service to their valued customers.

Merchants offers a market for standard and preferred risks through our companies: Merchants Mutual Insurance Company (Mutual) and Merchants Preferred Insurance Company (Preferred). The companies are marketed together, and the appointed agents generally represent both.

Where are we located?

Merchants Insurance Group provides property and casualty insurance protection to policyholders in Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.  Our regional offices are located in:

Agency Volume

We have found great success with agents in the $5 million to $20 million range; however, we have a number of successful agents who fall outside this range.  In addition, multi-location agencies and agency groups with higher volume ($25 million or greater) are also highly desirable.  We seek agents who specialize in commercial lines and are prepared to do business immediately.

Agency Personnel

Merchants Insurance Group seeks to partner with agencies with a sales force, multiple producers and a support staff that exemplify professionalism in the insurance industry.  Our agents are financially secure and have long-term business plans and a solid strategy for the perpetuation of the agency.

Training

In addition to our thorough new agent onboarding process, we also offer our Producer Training School.  This is an intensive five-day seminar with an emphasis on property and casualty insurance sales.  The program is designed to help agency representatives increase their skills and enhance their sales techniques.  The seminar is open to insurance professionals with a minimum of 6 months experience in the industry, and attendees may earn continuing education credits.

Merchants continuously implements new features to make doing business with us faster and easier than ever.  Our password protected website exclusively for agents enables you to: quote and issue policies; report first notice of loss; use policy, billing and claims inquiry; and have access to loss run reports and more. This website is in an easy to use format and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
