Merchants Welcomed Back In-Person Interns for Summer 2022
Merchants Insurance Group was thrilled to resume our in-person internship program this year for the first time since 2019!
“The insurance industry offers many career opportunities,” said Charles Makey, President of Merchants Insurance Group. “Our internship program allows students the opportunity to gain real business experience from talented insurance professionals.”
This summer, Merchants welcomed three interns to our corporate headquarters in Buffalo, N.Y.
Merchants is committed to “providing many learning opportunities for students” and “continuing our summer internship program for students who wish to pursue a career in insurance,” according to Makey.
Our paid internship program provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. This year, Merchants interns worked alongside colleagues in information technology, legal claims, and marketing.
Ashleigh Lymburner, Legal Claims Law Clerk
Ashleigh Lymburner spent the summer as a Legal Claims Law Clerk at Merchants. This fall, Ashleigh begins her second year of law school at the University at Buffalo School of Law.
“I love everything about working at Merchants – welcoming and helpful colleagues, a flexible work-life balance, and a hands-on legal experience,” she said. “During my internship as a Legal Claims Law Clerk, I believe that I had an experience not many of my classmates had this summer. I learned new legal aspects, which I was not aware of, and I had an opportunity to apply everything that I learned during my first year of law school. I worked on numerous claims, including a wide variety of subjects (i.e., from labor law claims, to slip and fall claims, and even claims regarding the Child Victims Act).”
Jonah Cross, IT Business Analyst Intern
Jonah Cross worked at Merchants this summer as an IT Business Analyst Intern. The soon-to-be sophomore majors in finance at Fordham University, located in The Bronx, N.Y.
“I have truly enjoyed the experiences that my time at Merchants has brought me so far,” Jonah said. “It has been a great honor to get to work with and learn from so many skilled and hardworking professionals. I look forward to working at Merchants every day, and I have and will continue to take away valuable skills and lessons from my time here.”
Joseph (Joe) Mancuso, Social Media Intern
Joe Mancuso, a rising junior, worked in our corporate marketing department this summer as a Social Media Intern. He studies marketing and risk management and insurance (RMI) at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y.
“I have learned so much from my experiences and projects that will help me in the future, which has made me an even better marketer than I was,” Joe said. “I know I always have someone to contact in the future if I am looking for help or a potential job!”

In late July, interns Jonah Cross and Joe Mancuso joined Merchants’ president, Charles Makey, and Vice President of Human Resources, Kelly Julius, for lunch at Pearl Street Grill, across the street from Merchants’ corporate headquarters in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.
“I mean, what successful company lets their interns eat with the executives?” said Joe Mancuso about the experience. “[That] just says something about the culture they’ve developed at Merchants over the years.”
