Edward M. Murphy, Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, Merchants Insurance Group, has been given the Canisius College 2017 Dr. Richard A. Shick Award.

Mr. Murphy, who has been with Merchants for 32 years, earned a bachelor’s degree in history and religious studies from Canisius.

The award was created in 2001 in honor of Dr. Richard A. Shick, dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business from 1979 to 2002. The award is given to an individual who has made important contributions to the success of the business school and Canisius College. Candidates are nominated by the school’s Business Advisory Council, and the recipient is recognized at the annual Business Awards Dinner.

During his years as a business professional, Mr. Murphy has played major roles in the company’s community involvement with Canisius College. He was asked to help found the Golden Griffin Fund at Canisius College in 2004, an investment-management course for both undergraduate seniors and MBA finance majors. In this role, Mr. Murphy has mentored scores of students in preparing equity recommendations to the Golden Griffin Fund committee for possible purchase.

Mr. Murphy and his wife, Lynn, also support Golden Griffin Fund students with an annual scholarship available on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Mr. Murphy was selected by the college for honorary membership in the international Beta Gamma Sigma Society for collegiate schools of business, and has also been recognized for his service to Canisius with his induction into the DiGamma Honor Society.
