Christopher Koenig Appointed to Board of Directors

Merchants Insurance Group has named Christopher Koenig, PT, DPT, MBA, LNHA, to its Board of Directors.

Currently, Mr. Koenig is President and Chief Executive Officer of Niagara Lutheran Health System; President and Chief Executive Officer of Schofield Care; President of Lineage Care Group; and Adjunct Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Public Health and Health Related Professions. He holds professional licenses in NYS Physical Therapy and New York State Nursing Home Administration.

Mr. Koenig serves as Vice Chair of New York American Physical Therapy Association, Western District; Board of Directors President of Leading Age Western New York; and Board of Managers President of WNY Long Term Care IPA.

Additionally, he is a member of:

  • The WNY COVID Vaccine Equity Taskforce
  • Accountable Healthy Community Foundation Board of Directors
  • Buffalo Colon Corp Board of Directors
  • Leading Age New York Nursing Facility Cabinet

Mr. Koenig was featured in Business First’s 40 Under 40 in 2017 and Who’s Who in Healthcare from 2016-2023. He’s also been named on Business First’s Power 250, recognizing the most influential leaders in the Western New York region, for four consecutive years.

Mr. Koenig has been honored with awards and designations such as:

  • Academic Service Award from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Related Professions in May 2020.
  • Emerging Leaders Award, presented by We Raise Foundation and Lutheran Services in America, in May 2018.
  • Thomas Clarke Memorial Award from Leading Age New York in May 2018.

Mr. Koenig has presented at 32 professional speaking engagements on topics such as, most recently, “Healthcare Mergers and Acquisitions in the For Profit vs Not for Profit Arena,” and “Best Practices for Managing the Property Valuation Process for Acquisitions in the Senior Housing Industry,” at the Marcus Evans Executive Summit Series; “Board-CEO Relations: Leading Through Disruptive Change,” at the Lutheran Services in America Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois; and “Enhancing Care for Patients with Complex & Special Needs – Improving Transitions of Care,” at the VBP Forward Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Buffalo, New York.

He earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master in Business Administration from the University at Buffalo in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Mr. Koenig also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies from the University at Buffalo and a certificate in Nursing Home Administration from Utica University. He currently resides in Clarence, New York.
